SHELLY PALMER
Artist’s Statement
My journey as an artist began in seventh grade when my mother bought me
a sketchbook. From that moment on, I spent hours each day drawing everything
around our home—the rotary telephone, plants, ceramic sculptures, and even
my cat. My love for art has only grown since then. Today, I primarily work
with gouache and alcohol markers. I’ve had incredible opportunities to paint
in Tuscany, Nantucket, Monet’s garden, and throughout the beautiful landscapes
of Connecticut.
Beyond drawing and painting, I enjoy all kinds of creative projects such
as sewing, collaging, and scrapbooking. Recently, I discovered a passion
for sculpting clay gnomes. After crafting nearly 100 of them, I decided
to start drawing them too. Now, they are one of my favorite subjects to
illustrate—alongside cats, dogs, and flowers. My goal is to create art that
brings joy and a sense of peace, and I hope you find that in my work as
well.
I’ve worn many hats—working at fast food restaurants, department stores,
and as a bank teller—but for nearly four decades, one of my greatest passions
has been teaching. I’ve taught at every level, sharing my love of art with
students of all ages.
As an artist and educator, I am always developing my skills, continuously
drawing, painting, and exploring new-to-me crafts like paper quilling. I
am also an active member of an artist community called The Paint Slayers,
where I find inspiration and camaraderie among fellow creatives.
